A 39-year-old motorist was arrested by Gauteng traffic police for driving more than 240km/h on the N4 highway last week.

According to spokesperson Sello Maremane, the man was driving a red BMW on the freeway to Bronkhorstspruit at around 21:15 on Thursday.

“As law enforcement authorities, we are concerned that excessive speeding in Gauteng has become a daily occurrence,” he said.

“The latest arrested speedster is the highest recorded incident in the province in the past two years.”

Meanwhile, on the same evening, four people lost their lives near the Donkerhoek off-ramp on the N4 toward Mpumalanga.

Maremane said preliminary information indicated that a heavy motor vehicle lost control and bumped into a light motor vehicle that was towing a trailer.

He explained that four people sustained fatal injuries while a fifth person sustained serious injuries.

The four deceased were occupants of the light motor vehicle.

“The road fatalities experienced by the province in recent time are attributable to among others, not wearing a seatbelt, violation of traffic signals, distracted driving, using public roads while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speeding, unsafe overtaking, and jay-walking,” Maremane said.
