Government waives experience requirement for all entry-level jobs

Young people are encouraged to visit NYDA branches across the country and access their free Wi-Fi and internet services to apply for available vacancies.

From 2019 job seekers will no longer need work experience for an entry-level government job, Rekord Moot reports.

Public Service and Administration Minister Ayanda Dlodlo said the decision was made following heavy lobbying by the national youth development agency (NYDA) chairperson Sifiso Mtsweni.

“Even during the much-anticipated Jobs Summit, we remained steadfast that the only practical way to reduce the high youth unemployment rate in the immediate is scrapping of experience for all entry-level jobs,” Mtsweni said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa told a Youth Day rally on 16 June that there were too many graduates with university degrees who were still unemployed.

He called on all companies – both in the public and private sector – to make a deliberate effort to seek out unemployed graduates and employ them.

Dlodlo also introduced a new Z83 form for government vacancy applications.

Mtsweni encouraged young people to visit NYDA branches across the country and access their free Wi-Fi and internet services to apply for available vacancies.

“South Africa’s youth should rest assured that the NYDAremains their hope and will drive their agenda for socio-economic emancipation to its logical conclusion,” Mtsweni said.

NYDA spokesperson Lerato Gambu said the scrapping of experience would reduce the extremely high youth unemployment rate, especially among graduates. “A lot of young people are outside the job markets, because they are required a form of experience for entry-level jobs”, said Gambu.

He said the scrapping of experience in the public sector should also be legislated and the private sector should play a part in employing young inexperienced people.
