Hammanskraal protest to close roads for a week

A pamphlet doing the rounds says roads in the area would be blocked from Monday until Friday.

Community members in Hammanskraal have threatened to block roads in the area on Monday morning, reports Rekord North.

Roads will be closed early on Monday and will remain blocked throughout the week, a community representative said.

Makau Simon Kekana, who represents the community, said the closures will be to protest a toll gate in the area.

“Residents in Hammanskraal must pay when they enter and again when they leave,” said Kekana.

“All the while we don’t get anything in return. The toll gate is not benefitting the community in any way.”

The community is also unhappy about industrial development in the area. “We as the community of Hammanskraal get no benefit from this development either.”

A pamphlet doing the rounds says roads in the area would be blocked until Friday. Another protest is planned for 1 May and will also last a week long.

Kekana said organisers of the protest expected a large turnout. He did not disclose exactly which roads would be closed.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintend Isaac Mahamaba could not provide comment on the planned protest before publishing.
