High-risk patient shows courage in lockdown

Buccleuch resident Ayaan Bhoopal (10) continues to show courage and bring joy to those around him during the lockdown.

Ayaan has struggled with health issues his entire life after being diagnosed with a complex heart and lung condition just six weeks after birth. He has undergone five open-heart surgeries and is on 24-hour oxygen at home, where he lives with his mother Seshma, who is a teacher at Buccleuch Primary School.

The Chronicle, which has followed Ayaan’s story for a number of years, spoke to Seshma about Ayaan’s struggles and joys during the lockdown.

Seshma explained that her worry concerning Ayaan’s health and potential infection is compounded during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With Ayaan being categorised as a high-risk patient, Seshma is not taking any chances during this outbreak and had been reliant on friends and family to deliver groceries and essentials to their home.

“Although I am taking every precaution to keep Ayaan well, I wish there was more I could do to prevent him from any health issues during this difficult time,” said Seshma.

She said that having a childlike Ayaan, who is full of fun, helps keep them busy each day.

“Although I am extremely scared, I must show a brave face and continue as normal for the sake of Ayaan’s overall well-being. Fortunately, Ayaan’s health condition is stable for now.”

Seshma is thankful for the support she receives from the community, offering assistance, prayers and well-wishes at this stressful time.

Ayaan celebrated his crown birthday on 10 April and was sad to miss out on having a big party with friends and family.

Seshma is also thankful for the consistent support from Reach for a Dream Foundation which has enabled Ayaan to realise many of his dreams including seeing wild animals at a nature reserve and receiving tickets for a WWE show. Ayaan recently participated in the Reach for a Dream hope video project, giving hope to children in waiting.

“I commend Reach for a Dream Foundation in their efforts to help terminally-ill children to have a moment of joy that becomes their best moment in life.”

Seshma encourages fellow community members to heed the call to stay home.

“Be considerate at all times of the person next to you, even though you might not know their history. They could be a high-risk person with life-threatening diseases,” concluded Seshma.
