Hijackers use cold drink to distract motorist
A case of hijacking has been opened after a 31-year-old man was hijacked by armed robbers who allegedly threw cold drink at his face in Prince George Avenue in Brakpan, Gauteng.
The man, who wants to remain anonymous, was driving in Prince George Avenue on Sunday at about 1.30am, when he noticed that he was being followed by a Black Polo with four occupants,Brakpan Herald reported.
“I kept on looking in my rear-view mirror and then suddenly the car passed me and stopped in front of my car,” he said.
“One of the occupants immediately got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at me. There was no chance of getting away, so I stopped my vehicle. Another occupant, sitting in the back of the Polo, also climbed out, holding something in his hand,” he added.
“He opened my door and just started shaking what he had in his hand and threw the liquid over my face. It tasted like cold drink. I was baffled by what happened; I didn’t do anything.
“They then grabbed me and dragged me out of my car and then drove off with it.”
“I didn’t know where to go or what to do, because my cellphone was in my car, but I decided to walk to Springs, where my brother lives.”
Investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, a 33-year-old man was hijacked and put in the boot of his burning car in Hibberdene, KwaZulu-Natal, in May.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the man parked his car at a car wash in the Mfazazana area at 2am when two men approached him.
“The knife-wielding suspects forced him into the passenger seat. Three other men got inside the vehicle and drove off to a deserted place where they took off his clothing, bound his hands and feet and shoved him in the boot of the car,” added Wiid.
After placing him in the boot, the hijackers set the vehicle alight, but the man managed to escape from the burning car and contacted police, said Wiid.
