Hijacking syndicate captured in Isipingo

Quick-thinking law enforcement officers clamped down on a car theft and hijacking syndicate operating in the Isipingo community after receiving a tip-off, recently.

The information regarding the syndicate was relayed to the relevant role-players by members of ET Rapid Response TRT and it was established that vehicle parts, which had been stolen in Amanzimtoti in February, were being advertised on the internet.

A task team, including various law enforcement officers, was formed in order to deal with the task at hand. ET Rapid Response and Amanzimtoti CCPO worked swiftly and were able to track down the complainant, who is also a professional mechanic and was willing to assist in the operation.

The information led to the interception of a VW Polo. The accused admitted to selling the said motor vehicle parts. They co-operated and led the joint task team to a residence in Isipingo where there was a number of stripped motor vehicle parts which came up positive in Amanzimtoti theft cases.

Upon further inspection, a vehicle was found with suspected stolen parts, which were also identified by the complainant due to identification of personalised markings on certain parts.

It was also established that the residence was being used for a number of months as a ‘chop shop’ for wanted motor vehicles and also for housing of wanted motor vehicles.

It is through the proficient co-ordination of the Isipingo SAPS, ET Rapid Response, Tracker SA, RTI, Amanzimtoti CCPO and SAPS Vehicle Theft Unit, that the operation was a success. Two suspects were arrested and detained at Isipingo SAPS and other stolen parts were impounded by the Isipingo pound.

Isipingo SAPS police spokesman, Cpt David Ragavan, confirmed that after a vehicle was stolen in Amanzimtoti in February was advertised on Facebook, a sting operation was set up to recover the vehicle.

At around 14:30pm on Thursday, May 7, the police proceeded to a house on Pardy Road in Isipingo Hills where the stolen vehicle was found.

“The vehicle was found totally stripped and some parts of that vehicle were found on another BMW belonging to one of the accused. The stripped vehicle was seized and placed at the Isipingo pound,” he said.

Cpt Ragavan explained that two men were arrested charged for possession of stolen property. They appeared in court on Monday morning.

“Management commended Det W/O Nadesan and Det W/O Vivan Govender of Isipingo SAPS on their good work,” he added.
