Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park property destruction condemned
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is working closely with local government and traditional leadership to contain protest action that has led to property destruction at the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.
Acts of vandalism were first reported last Tuesday after a group of people set alight a section of the park’s fence and a gate, with further sections of the fence vandalised on Thursday.
Protesters demanded employment at the game reserve.
Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC, Ravi Pillay condemned the acts, which he said pose a threat to staff at the park.
“Destroying and burning down infrastructure puts surrounding communities in danger of attack from wild animals,” said Pillay.
“This will also have huge financial implications for Ezemvelo, which is still reeling from the financial pressures precipitated by Covid-19.”
He said the community’s right to protest is respected, but such protests should be carried out in accordance with the law, without threatening individuals, wildlife and the environment.
“The management of Ezemvelo has begun engagements with community representatives and the department is being briefed on developments,’ said Pillay.
“We will work closely with the police, the Department of Community Safety, Cogta, councillors and the traditional leadership in the area to contain the situation.”
