Hoedspruit fire displaces 200 people

A shack fire in Plastic View, Hoedspruit, destroyed about 100 homes and displaced 200 residents, with support efforts underway.

After a devastating shack fire broke out last night at the Plastic View informal settlement, the Maruleng Local Municipality’s Disaster Management team began assessing the extent of the damage.

Municipal spokesperson Justice Shipalana said this morning that the cause of the fire remains unknown, Letaba Herald reports.

He noted that strong winds intensified the blaze, causing it to spread rapidly and destroy roughly 100 shacks, leaving about 200 people affected.

“Encouragingly, no injuries or fatalities were reported during or after the incident,” Shipalana said.

In the meantime, temporary shelter is being arranged, and the municipality has activated support measures to assist affected families.
