IEC concludes results for 18 municipalities as vote counting continues
Voters can track the 2026 Local Government Election results as votes are counted, with the IEC’s dashboard showing a province- and party-by-party breakdown.
Vote counting for the 2026 Local Government Elections is underway, with results from 18 local municipalities concluded so far.
The IEC said it expects 66 073 result slips from local municipalities, metros and district councils across 23 696 voting stations countrywide.
About 23 444 (35.5%) of the expected result slips have been scanned through to the results system, and 22 983 (34.8%) have been captured.
The commission said that 16 791 result slips (25.4% of the total expected slips) have already been independently audited, and results from 18 local municipalities (7%) were concluded at 09:00 today (November 5).
Dashboard: Track the results
The IEC’s results dashboard provides a comprehensive update on the breakdown of the vote count for each province and each political party. It also compares results with previous years.
Party agents observe vote tallying
The IEC said it conducts the counting process in the presence of political party agents, independent candidate agents and accredited observers at the voting stations where votes were cast.
“After counting, a result slip is captured in duplicate in front of party and independent agents, as well as observers. The agents can record and make photographic images of the results slips. Similarly, the IEC makes an image of the results to facilitate retrieval by contestants where this may be required.”
From the voting station, result slips are transported in tamper-evident envelopes to the commission’s local capturing site.
Quality assurance and independent auditing
The IEC said capturing involved stringent quality assurance measures, including double-blind capturing of the result slips, scanning the result slips into the results system and auditing the total population of results by independent auditors.
In addition, the IEC said it used an automated results system process to check possible anomalies such as excessive voter turnout or variance in votes for a party in the same voting station.
The IEC appealed to political parties, independent candidates and their supporters to exercise patience, allow the counting and results-capturing processes to unfold, and not spread false information.
