Interpol red list fugitive arrested in Sandton

Israel's most-wanted gang leader, a 46-year-old man who was on Interpol's red list since 2015, was nabbed along with seven other men.

A multi-disciplinary team led by Interpol South Africa, Organised Crime, detectives, crime intelligence and a special task force, have arrested a 46-year-old Israeli gang leader, believed to be attached to a criminal organisation in Israel called the ‘Abergil Organisation’.

The wanted fugitive and seven others were arrested at a house in Bryanston, Sandton, this morning.

The Israeli gang leader has been on Interpol’s red notice since 2015. He is a wanted suspect in Israel for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.

According to Israeli authorities, the suspect is part of a notorious gang dealing in drugs, trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities.

It is said that the wanted suspect allegedly placed a bomb underneath a vehicle in Israel, on two separate occasions – in 2003 and 2004 respectively. As a result of the first explosion, five people sustained serious injuries but all miraculously survived.

In the second incident, the suspect also attempted to do the same with the same victim, where he reportedly placed a bomb on top of a vehicle. In this incident, three people sustained serious injuries.

During an early morning takedown operation, the team pounced on an identified address in Bryanston and found the suspect and seven others. The team also seized 12 firearms, five assault rifles, seven pistols, 40 000 US dollars and three suspected stolen motorcycles.

A search warrant was executed and investigations continue.
