Joburg mother admits to selling daughter as sex slave

The woman and her partner were later arrested after the girl reported the matter to police, North Eastern Tribune reported.

A case of sexual assault had been registered.

Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Nurse Sanyane said the couple had been aggressive when they arrived at the station, swearing and shouting at officers.

Sanyane added that when the mother was interviewed, she showed no remorse for what she was accused of.

“The mother said ‘Yes, I did it. So what?’,” said Sanyane.

The victim allegedly told police that her mother would invite men to come to their house to have sexual intercourse with her in return for money for the mother.

“When the child refused, the mother allegedly threatened her saying, ‘If you don’t do it, you won’t have food’, and the girl had no choice but to do it,” said Sanyane.

“However at the moment it is not clear as to how long the girl’s ordeal had been happening.”

It was believed that on the day of the arrests, the mother had allegedly beaten up the teenager, and that her stepfather had strangled her.

Police confirmed that the case was transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

This after President Jacob Zuma launched the 16 Days of Activismcampaign for no violence against women and children in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni.

The international campaign started on November 25 and runs until December 10 to raise awareness of the negative impact violence has on women, children and society.

Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said at the launch that communities needed to encourage people to speak out about abuse instead of remaining silent.

“All of us need to make sure we intervene. Peace in the world begins at home,” she said.
