Kruger National Park field ranger goes missing while on patrol
The ranger went missing while on patrol along the Nsikazi River in the Stolsnek section.
According to a statement released by SANParks, field ranger, Checkers Mashego went missing while on patrol in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
“During the early evening of November 17, while on routine patrol along the Nsikazi River in the Stolsnek section in the south of the Kruger, he was reported missing by his colleagues after failing to arrive at their agreed rendezvous point.”
The Stolsnek section ranger and his ranger corps initiated a thorough search through the night. It intensified at first light on November 18 with the support of a SANParks helicopter, K9 unit and extra rangers.
“At the time of this release, the field ranger is sadly still missing. He was in his full ranger uniform and had his rifle, cell phone and radio at the time.”
KNP managing executive, Gareth Coleman said, “SANParks officials have notified his family and are currently in contact with them to provide any further support required.
“The incident was reported to the SAPS which have registered a missing person’s enquiry at the Skukuza Police Station.”
In the release, it was stated that SANParks will continue with its efforts and leave no stone unturned in the search for Mashego.
