KZN: Beaches still closed as sewage spill repairs begin
The uMhlanga beaches are still closed due to the polluted water.
AFTER the sewage spill that left the uMhlanga Lagoon littered with dead fish, a site visit to the Riverpump Station in Blackburn Village was conducted on Thursday, 5 September, Northglen News reports.
According to the Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), there has been no change in the flow of sewage into the Ohlanga River since a pipe burst weeks ago.
Precinct manager for the UIP, Dewet Geldenhuys, said that despite heavy rains pipe repairs are expected to be completed over the weekend.
“The report provided by senior management at the eThekwini Municipality Waste Water Department explains that the pipe from Cape Town which is required to fix the issue has arrived. Repair and preparation will start as soon as possible with the aim to have the issue repaired by Saturday, 7 September,” added Geldenhuys.
The community is advised to avoid the polluted water and the uMhlanga beaches are still closed due to safety risks. The eThekwini Municipality had not sent their comment at the time that this article was published.
