KZN has recorded 6 549 drunk-driving arrests under its #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign, as transport authorities prepare to launch the operation’s next phase, reports The Witness.

Sixteen motorists were detained in Newcastle this week following End-of-Snow parties held across the province, according to KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma.

The latest arrests were carried out by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) as part of the #NenzaniLaEzweni road safety operation, which was launched on August 15, 2025.

Those arrested in Newcastle included a taxi driver, union organiser, IT technician, intern, radiologist, prison warden, administrative clerk, packaging operator and landscaper. Six unemployed people and a self-employed person were also among those arrested.

Operation moves into next phase

Duma said the arrests form part of efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities across the province.

“When we started the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operations, there was pushback from certain individuals and sectors of society, but our determination to reduce fatalities and road crashes motivated RTI to remain focused,” he said.

He said the operation had helped prevent deaths and the devastating impact road crashes have on families.

“We have successfully prevented the destruction of families and the creation of widows and orphans by arresting reckless and irresponsible motorists,” Duma said.

Duma thanked the South African Police Service, Department of Health, Department of Home Affairs and National Prosecuting Authority for supporting the operation.

He also acknowledged private security companies, community policing forums and non-governmental organisations involved in the campaign.

More than 98% of cases result in convictions

Duma said authorities had placed a strong focus on ensuring that evidence in drunk-driving cases was properly handled.

RTI and SAPS worked together in processing arrests, while blood samples from suspected drunk drivers were managed within two hours to preserve their validity and admissibility in court.

Undocumented foreign nationals found driving under the influence were also referred to the relevant authorities.

According to Duma, more than 98% of drunk-driving cases have resulted in successful convictions.

He attributed this to co-operation between the National Prosecuting Authority and RTI teams, as well as adherence to evidence-handling procedures and court processes.

Road safety campaign reconfigured

Duma said the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation would now enter its next phase as part of the province’s reconfigured road safety campaign.

“As announced during the Budget Speech on July 16, the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation will now move to the next phase in line with the reconfiguration of our Road Safety Campaign,” Duma said.

The department continues to urge motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol, particularly during periods of increased travel and celebrations.
