KZN Health Department debunks false Ebola voice note
Officials condemn a viral message about Ebola cases in Durban and Ladysmith, warning that spreading fake news carries legal consequences.
The KZN Department of Health has dismissed a voice note circulating on social media that claims there are Ebola cases at Victoria Mxenge Hospital (formerly King Edward VIII Hospital) in Durban, as well as in Ladysmith.
According to the Ladysmith Gazette, the department said there are no confirmed or suspected Ebola cases anywhere in the province or South Africa.
In a statement issued yesterday (July 2), health officials condemned the spread of the fake voice note, warning that it causes unnecessary panic and fear. The department urges the public not to share unverified information and warns that legal action may be taken against those who deliberately create or spread false health-related claims.
The department assured the public that South Africa’s disease surveillance and outbreak response systems remain fully operational. Officials reiterated that the country remains Ebola-free, advising residents to rely only on official Department of Health communication channels for verified health information.
