KZN premier launches road safety plan ahead of festive season

The plan encompasses a number of law enforcement activities to curb crime and road carnage this festive season.

Cross-border crimes in northern KZN are being addressed under the Integrated Safer Plan launched by Premier Sihle Zikalala in Durban last Tuesday.

The plan encompasses a number of law enforcement activities to curb crime and road carnage this festive season.

For too long, the Manguzi area has been plagued with criminals hijacking cars which are then taken across the border into Mozambique.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Neliswa Nkonyeni last Sunday led an integrated law enforcement operation at the Kosi Bay border in uMhlabuyalingana.

During the operation, five drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, two vehicles suspended, while 25 drivers were issued fines for various offences.

“This was an indication of what the festive season will look like,” said Nkonyeni.

“We are tired of people who disobey traffic laws. We want people to know that our roads are not their playground, and we are going to be hard on all those people.

“We are also sending a clear message to criminals terrorising people by stealing their cars, that this too will end.’
