Local man accused of beating wife to death appears in court

Victims husband claimed that he discovered his wife robbed and murdered in their house.

A 56-year-old man, who allegedly beat his wife to death with a blunt object in Ga-Rankuwa, zone 5 on Tuesday last week, appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa magistrate’s court on Friday on murder charges.

Ike Kojang’s case was postponed to January 28 for his attorney to be present in court as he opted not to be represented by legal aid.

The court was filled with residents who were demanding that the accused not be released on bail.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, they were called by Kotjang who claimed that he discovered his wife robbed and murdered in their house.

“Police went to the scene and called paramedics, who certified the woman was dead after she was found with head injuries.”

He added that they suspect that a blunt object was used to kill her.

Masondo said a preliminary investigation was held and led to Kojang’s arrest.

Residents at the scene claimed Kojang held his children hostage after he had allegedly killed his wife. However, police have not confirmed whether the allegations by the residents were true.

Ike’s mother, Pulane Kojang, said the family was in great pain and they were really embarrassed by the incident.

“What happened is painful to all of us, but we have accepted it. This will not come between us as the two families. The families have kids and we just want to make peace and ask forgiveness.”

She said she is yet to speak to her son since the incident happened.

“I haven’t spoken to him, I just want to know what happened but I haven’t had the chance yet.”
