Man, 60, assaulted with metal object during house robbery
A case of house robbery has been opened after a 60-year-old man was beaten with a metal object on his legs when four robbers entered his home in Rynfield, Benoni, in Gauteng.
Benoni police cluster spokesperson Tryna Maritz said the man was in his home when four men driving in a silver vehicle stopped at the residence on Wednesday, Benoni City Times reported.
“Three men lifted the gate off the rail and entered the yard. They opened the sliding door and broke the safety door’s lock and gained entry. They then made their way into the house via the bedroom,” added Maritz.
Maritz said the victim made his way into the bedroom from the kitchen after hearing a loud noise. He was overpowered by three of the men and hit on the legs with the steel part of a pick.
“The man screamed shortly before a cloth was put in his mouth. The man’s wife heard the racket and made her way to the bedroom. The robber fled at the sight of her,” added Maritz.
“The woman then pressed the panic button and went towards the garage and saw a silver hatchback vehicle leaving the premises. The victim was treated on scene by paramedics,” said Maritz.
Nothing was taken from the house, and no arrests have been made. Maritz said further charges could be added.
Last month, a case of house robbery and assault was opened after a man was allegedly attacked by two suspects in his home in the President Park area of Midrand, in Gauteng.
Francois van Niekerk, 26, and his girlfriend, 22, were still awake when their small dog started barking at 3am.
Van Niekerk was then taken to hospital and was treated for a large head wound, a deep gash in his arm, which needed five stitches, while the other arm received two stitches. He also had a cut on his lip, which received seven stitches.
