Man caught with counterfeit cigarettes

A man has been remanded in custody after he was arrested for possession of counterfeit cigarettes worth about R195 000 on the N2 near Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal.

After failing to stop at the Golela Port of Entry, patrol guards chased the Nissan bakkie, arrested the 38-year-old driver and seized the counterfeit goods, Zululand Observer reported.

The suspect, Lucas Bongani Bhanda, was charged with the possession of counterfeit goods and appeared in the Pongola Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

Bhanda was remanded in custody until Friday for a formal bail application.

In a separate incident, police seized counterfeit goods worth about R3 million and illicit cigarettes worth about R470 000 in Western Cape in November last year.

During the operation, a total of 117 people were arrested for various offences, including drug possession and house robbery.
