Man stabs boy, 6, in the neck on KZN beach

A case of attempted murder is under investigation after a six-year-old boy was stabbed in the neck while playing on the beach with his cousins at Cuttings Beach, in Merebank, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the boy’s uncle, Trevor Pillay, who witnessed the stabbing on Sunday, an unknown man picked up the victim, Triston Rubendra, and stabbed him in the neck before dropping him down on the sand and walking away, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

“I was relaxing on the sand, and when I got up to check on the children, I saw the man stab my nephew,” he said.

“I immediately screamed to alert the others as to what was transpiring as I ran towards Triston to check his condition. The suspect was still casually walking away as if nothing had happened. A group of people who were also at the beach then gave chase and caught the man. However, he wrestled with them and managed to escape. Police were called and later caught the suspect,” Pillay added.

Triston was rushed to Wentworth Hospital, where he received stitches before being transferred to King Edward VIII Hospital. His parents, Malcolm and Ronelle Rubendra, said their son was enduring severe pains and had to undergo another operation.

“Our baby is in so much of pain, and although we feel helpless at this point, we are just thankful that he is alive. He underwent an operation to remove blood clots from his lungs. We want the man who did this to our baby to face the full might of the law,” said the parents.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the motive for the attack was unknown. The suspect is expected to appear in the Wentworth Magistrates’ Court.

Last month, a 19-year-old man appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court after he allegedly stabbed and killed a teenage boy in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

The alleged murder happened after thousands of would-be concert goers discovered the annual Ukhozi FM Concert, which is traditionally held on the last Sunday of the Royal Agricultural Show, was not taking place on that day.

Despite that, the revellers turned up outside the showground vicinity and partied on the streets. The hordes of attendees reportedly turned the field opposite the Invesco centre into a makeshift party zone, which soon descended into chaos as violence broke out. The young man, identified only as “Themba”, was apparently attacked and stabbed repeatedly.
