March and March supporters have vowed to spend the night on Che Guevara Road tonight (Thursday, September 10) alongside the 250 refugees who are currently camped on the pavements of the busy Umbilo street in Durban, reports Berea Mail.

The protesters, led by the founder of the anti-illegal immigration movement, Jacinta Ngobese Zuma, arrived early this morning, accompanied by a heavy law-enforcement presence.

The heightened security measures followed last Thursday’s violent clashes between the two groups that left several people injured and others detained by police.

Waving their grass mats in the air, the March and March members moved from King Dinuzulu Park to Che Guevara Road while singing and chanting, “Abahambe” (they must go).

“They must go back to their country and stop dirtying our streets,” said one protester.

Her sentiments were echoed by another March and March supporter, who vowed to sleep on Che Guevara Road tonight.

“I am not going anywhere, I am sleeping here tonight. If they can sleep here so can we. What is so special about them? They get free food and are being looked after, we also want the same.”

The tense stand-off remained in place at around 13:00, with the protesters and refugees still occupying the area.
