Mark Lifman murder suspects’ case postponed due to pending evidence
The two men accused of murdering Cape Town underworld figure Mark Lifman appeared in a George court this morning.
The two men accused of murdering Mark Lifman in November last year, Johannes Jacobs and Gert Bezuidenhout, made a brief appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court earlier this morning.
George Herald reports the case was remanded to April 15, as ballistic reports and cellphone analysis reports are still outstanding. Raw footage from seven cellphones, including two with international numbers, still needs to be analysed.
The defence argued that a long postponement infringes on the rights of the accused and said arrests should not be made with the intention to investigate thereafter.
They requested a postponement of no more than four weeks.
Magistrate Nasiba Khan agreed that a lengthy postponement would not be suitable and postponed the case until April.
Jacobs and Bezuidenhout’s bail was denied in January after Magistrate André Aucamp ruled that their release would not be in the interest of justice and found no exceptional circumstances to justify bail.
They have remained in custody since their arrest.
Lifman, a prominent Cape Town underworld figure, was gunned down at the Garden Route Mall on November 3. The accused were arrested later that day near Uniondale.
