Mbombela grandson still behind bars for grandmother’s murder

A man accused of murdering his grandmother during a heated argument is expected to appear in court next week for a possible plea.

JJ Peters, who is on trial for the murder of his grandmother in Mbombela in Mpumalanga, will spend another Christmas behind bars.

It is alleged that on February 28, 2022, the accused and the victim, Susanna Kilmister, had a heated argument, which led to Peters assaulting her, and causing her death.

Peters was sharing Kilmister’s house on a smallholding in the Cromdale area about 6km outside of Mbombela on the R40.

He abandoned his official bail application during his third district court appearance on March 16, 2022, after he had been in court for it twice.

Peters made another brief appearance in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Monday, and the matter was postponed to December 11 for a possible plea.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s provincial spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, Peters’ defence is finalising the paperwork for his plea so that his trial can start. She says if the matter goes according to plan, the long-awaited trial will start early next year.

Peters has already been in custody for almost 22 months.
