Metered taxi drivers protesting against Uber

Metered taxi drivers gathered in Parktown North in Johannesburg on Monday to protest against “ride hailing service” Uber.

Following the protest action by metered taxi drivers on Friday against Uber – the online taxi service that has recently emerged in South Africa – things appear to be getting out of hand this morning, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported.

It is believed metered taxi drivers harassed Uber passengers at Sandton City Mall over the weekend.

Head of Crime Line, Yusuf Abramjee, tweeted about the incident that allegedly took place outside the mall.

In a statement, the general manager of Uber Johannesburg, Alon Litz, said the intimidation was getting progressively worse.

“We are in constant communication with the drivers assuring them that their safety is our number one priority .We’re looking into ways to reduce cases of intimidation.”

Uber has appealed to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) for protection for their drivers.

The taxi drivers said Uber was making business difficult for them. Gauteng Metered Taxi Operations spokesperson Lucas Seale said: “Uber must go.”

The protesters continued to Uber in Sandton to hand over a memorandum stating that they want Uber to stop operating.
