Midrand policeman arrested in connection with hijacking

A police officer has been detained at Bramley Police Station in Johannesburg following his arrest for allegedly hijacking a motor vehicle and using his state firearm to commit a crime, Midrand Reporter reports.

Constable Abraham Nesani from Midrand Police Station was arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad police following a tip-off.

The spokesperson for the Johannesburg Flying Squad, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, said the officer was arrested together with an accomplice.

According to Subramoney, the two were spotted by a private security officer patrolling in Ivory Park.

“They allegedly hijacked a white Toyota Avanza and the security officer followed them until he saw a South African Police Service van parking in Allandale and stopped to alert the officers,” he said.

“The officers announced through our radio network and the car was spotted by other officers patrolling in Alexandra on the corner of Vasco and 4th Avenue. They stopped the vehicle and subsequently the officer and his accomplice were arrested.”

They were both charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle and were remanded in custody in the Bramley Police Station’s cells, added Subramoney.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm he possessed and allegedly used to commit the crime belongs to the state. “The investigation also revealed that he is working at the Midrand Saps in the crime prevention division.”

Nesani has since appeared twice in court and the investigation continues, he concluded.

Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, the spokesperson for the Gauteng police, has confirmed the arrest but did not wish to comment, saying the matter is with the court.

“You will need to contact the National Prosecution Authority and they’re the ones who will give you the answers,” he said.

Nesani is due in court on 8 August for his bail application.
