Missing Soweto couple found dead in car submerged in river

A couple's disappearance ended in tragedy when their bodies were found in a submerged car.

The bodies of a missing Meadowlands, Soweto, couple were pulled from a submerged Hyundai i10 in a river along Chris Hani Road, next to Lakeview Rea Vaya bus station, in Mofolo South yesterday, bringing a devastating end to a search that began weeks ago.

According to an article published by Soweto Urban, Mxolisi Sive and Nomhlanganiso Mpungose were last seen together on February 2 and were reported missing.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the police were notified by a passerby who spotted the car in the river. The deceased were identified by their families.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear.

Police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating further.

Emergency services and police officials at the scene where the bodies of a missing couple were found in a submerged car.

“The investigation is ongoing… We appeal to anyone with information to come forward,” says Masondo.
