Massive black mamba rescued in Mthwalume, KZN

They had reason to be distressed as a large black mamba had slithered into a hole in their rondavel.

Famed snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe has been having a very busy December.

So far he has caught 27 green mambas, two black mambas, a Mozambique spitting cobra, one python and a few other reptiles.

His most recent call-out came from a panicked family in Sipofu, Mthwalume.

They had reason to be distressed as a large black mamba had slithered into a hole in their rondavel.

The family sealed the hole off with clay and called Sarel at about midnight.

Sarel van der Merwe helps the black mamba escape by digging a hole on the outside of the rondavel.

The following morning Sarel drove 90 odd kilometres along with his friend, Paul Crook to find the homestead.

When he eventually reached the house, he managed to open the hole but struggled to find the deadly snake.

However, ever the improviser, he went outside, dug a hole and the mamba shot out like a rocket.

He was pleased with the outcome (as was the family). “It was a death trap for the snake as it had no way of escaping,” he said.
