More water cuts expected in KZN

Residents in Newcastle West and East, KwaZulu-Natal, should brace themselves for two days of water shortages this week, as two of the raw water pipelines supplying the Ngagane water plant will be isolated.

The Department of Water Affairs will be inspecting and assessing the Service Gates at the Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam tomorrow, Newcastle Advertiser reported.

It is believed the isolation of these pipelines will result in a 70% short supply of raw water to the plant over an eight-hour period.

Municipal officials confirmed the supply of drinking water would be affected, with outages expected to occur late on February 24 and undoubtedly throughout the day, continuing until late evening, on February 25.

The municipality has requested residents to use water sparingly and not to water gardens on these days.

In a separate incident, water cuts were on the cards for eThekwini municipality residents in KwaZulu-Natal, according to a notice published on the city’s Facebook page in December last year.

“We will continue to monitor the water consumption over the course of the week and should the situation not improve, we will then be left with no option but to impose water curtailment,” the municipality said.

The city also posted a list of the areas and establishments that could be affected by water “interruptions” on a daily basis: La Mercy, King Shaka International Airport, Verulam CBD, Dube Tradeport, Ndwedwe, Oaklands and farms along the N2 freeway.
