Mpumalanga police bribery case postponed

The case of four police officers who allegedly solicited a bribe from a taxi driver in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, has been postponed to next month.

Constables Bongani Nene (35), Sthembiso Mayisela (34), Zakhele Nyundu (31) and Promise Manzini (27) were arrested on November 26, Lowvelder reported.

The four had been arrested along with Safina Matja (56) after the officials allegedly accepted a bribe from Matja.

It is believed Matja was stopped by the police officers on the N4 while she was travelling from Mbombela to Middelburg.

They discovered counterfeit Converse All Star sneakers in her minibus taxi.

A bribe was allegedly exchanged, and Matja blew the whistle when she was stopped by other officials on her way to Middelburg.

Following a court appearance on Friday, the accused were released on R5 000 bail each.

They are all due in the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court again on March 24.

In January, CCTV footage emerged showing two Metro police officers allegedly taking a bribe in Westdene, Johannesburg.

In the footage, obtained by Westdene Johannesburg CROW, the two unidentified Metro police officers are seen pulling over a vehicle on New Year’s Day at 10.26am.

Towards the end of the footage, one of the officers seemingly takes a bribe from the driver of a black VW Golf.

Another video of a Johannesburg Metro police officer allegedly soliciting a bribe from a motorist emerged in the same month.

The video, captured on a cellphone and later posted on YouTube, shows an exchange between a metro police officer and a motorist who was stopped for allegedly driving drunk.

The officer then tells the unidentified motorist a breathalyser test can be avoided if he pays R200.
