N11 Kranspoort Pass closed after gas tanker overturns

A leaking gas tanker that overturned yesterday has temporarily shut the N11 Kranspoort Pass and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

The N11 Kranspoort Pass remains closed to allow for the recovery of an overturned gas tanker.

Middelburg Observer reports that, according to Johan Hamman, an instrumental role player in the stakeholder meetings conducted with Sanral, the pass will remain closed for several hours and is likely to reopen either very late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Hamman, who has been liaising with the Middelburg Fire Department, has received information that another truck is en route to have the liquefied petroleum gas transferred, which is expected to take another four hours.

“Hazmat teams will then still have to clean up any spilled gas.”

Hamman described the situation as a bomb waiting to go off. “It is a very dangerous situation and motorists should avoid the area at all costs. The Stoffberg road should be used as an alternative route.”

Middelburg Observer yesterday reported that the truck is lying in the field next to the road at route marker N11 10/34.2E. Liquid gas was leaking from the truck.

The fire department has requested that motorists stay far away from the scene due to the danger. In addition to the flammability of the gas, the fumes are also hazardous to inhale.
