National Cupcake Day raises R2.1m for children fighting cancer

Cupcake Angels across South Africa baked up a storm to help support over 140 young cancer patients every month.

National Cupcake Day has raised R2 106 021 to support children fighting cancer, with this year’s campaign surpassing the amount raised in 2025.

A total of 3 100 ‘Cupcake Angels’ from across South Africa pledged 117 886 cupcakes for the annual fundraising campaign, held last Saturday (September 26) at 87 participating malls.

The campaign raised R2 092 310 in 2025, when 2 400 bakers took part at 79 malls.

Supporting children and families

National Cupcake Day is the flagship annual fundraising event of Cupcakes of Hope, with the money raised used to support children with cancer and their families.

Cupcakes of Hope currently supports more than 140 children every month. Most beneficiaries are referred by social workers and doctors.

The organisation uses donations to cover medical bills and other essential needs, including transport and special requests.

Funds are also used for awareness campaigns aimed at highlighting childhood cancer and the support available to affected families.

The campaign has grown significantly since Cupcakes of Hope was founded by Sandy Cipriano in 2012. An earlier Caxton Network News report detailed how the initiative grew from a single fundraiser into a nationwide campaign supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer.
