Newborn baby girl found dead in a bin

The body of a newborn baby has been found dead in a rubbish bin at Valentia Flats in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on Wednesday morning.

Tefo Moremi, who found the baby, said he took out a half-empty rubbish bin from the Valencia Flats premises at about 7am and emptied it into a larger bin outside. An alleged drug addict, “nyaope boy”, who had been looking for food, told him there was a baby in the bin, Rekord East reported.

Moremi said there were four women living at Valentia flats and he had gone to see if any of them might had given birth secretly and dumped the lifeless baby. He found one woman, and she was still pregnant.

Ward 81 councillor Yvonne Dzumba said the infant was wrapped in a maroon checked shirt.

“We were afraid to touch anything because we did not want to tamper with evidence,” she added.

Dzumba said it was important for young women not ready to have children to be taught about the importance of safe sex and abstinence.

“We urge women who do not want their babies to drop them off at the Tshwane Home of Hope rather than dumping them anywhere. For more information on the Tshwane Home of Hope, call 012-341-6862,” added Dzumba.

Last month, a newborn baby boy was found abandoned in a veld on Potgieter Street, near the Kgosi Mampuru II prison, in Pretoria.

Best Care Ambulance Services spokesperson Xander Loubser said the infant’s umbilical cord was still freshly clamped when he was found.

“The umbilical clamp was done in hospital, and this probably occurred after the mom and baby were discharged from hospital,” Loubser said.

Loubser added paramedics were alerted by the CPF in the area. The baby boy was about 48 hours old and was taken to Steve Biko academic hospital for treatment.

Pretoria Central police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe confirmed the incident and said that it would be investigated.
