No bail for Mpumalanga pastor accused of raping teen congregant

A pastor who is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl who came to his home for prayers was denied bail when he appeared in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The 46-year-old pastor, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of the teenager, was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on January 6.

This is after the NPA successfully opposed his release on bail. The incident allegedly happened at his place of residence in Sabie during October.

“The court felt that the accused failed to prove the exceptional circumstances permitting his release on bail. It found that his release on bail might cause public disorder. He might interfere with the witnesses and might even evade trial,” says NPA provincial spokesperson Monica Nyuswa.

In handing down the judgment for the pastor’s bail application, the court mentioned he allegedly took advantage of the girl because he was entrusted as a spiritual father by his congregation.

The pastor was arrested last month following allegations that the girl went to his place of residence for prayers for a wound on her leg.

“When she arrived at the accused’s place of residence, the accused allegedly welcomed her, kissed her, and pushed her to his bedroom before raping her. The incident came to light after the victim told her friend at school who also shared the same experience with the victim, and the matter was reported to the police,” explains Nyuswa.

When the police arrested the pastor, he was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition, allegedly unlicensed.

The pastor is facing charges of rape and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Nyuswa says the NPA and the police would collaborate to ensure that the outstanding investigations are finalised so that the matter could go to trial.
