North West resort scrambles to recover after fire

Cleaning operations have commenced at a popular South African game reserve resort that suffered extensive fire damage over the weekend.

A fire that gutted vast areas of the Pilanesberg National Park on Saturday and razed the accommodation units at one of its resorts was apparently started by a braai fire lit in violation of resort rules.

The huge blaze raged until late in the afternoon and kept emergency personnel on high alert for any possible flare-ups. Manyane Resort entrance station suffered great loss and numerous chalets burnt to the ground, leaving people scrambling for safety.

A visitor reportedly lit a braai in violation of the rules. The flames evidently spread, sparking a fire that damaged key areas of the park.

On Monday, general manager Stephina Tshehla said most of the resort was badly affected. “We confirm that the resort lost 29 chalets, and 26 remain unscathed,” she added.

Due to the devastation, management resolved that bookings from yesterday onwards will be accommodated at Bakgatla resort, at the same rate, depending on availability.

“Alternatively, guests will be given an opportunity to postpone their holiday to later in the year,” she confirmed.

Tsehla said Manyane has undertaken the process of cleaning and removing the scorched rubble.

Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism spokesperson Jerry Matebesi says no injuries were reported and the department is working closely with Manyane.

Authorities will investigate the cause of the fire.

North West MEC Virginia Tlhapi says the unfortunate incident happened during Tourism Month, when the province is preparing to commemorate World Tourism Day on September 26 and 27.

“It is equally important to indicate that the fire outbreak happened immediately after the North West government held a successful premier’s investor dinner. The importance of the tourism sector to the economy of the North West cannot be overemphasised.”

Nearby Sun City fire

The kitchen at Sun City’s Cabanas also suffered substantial fire damage on Saturday, in an unrelated fire. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sun City said the blaze was successfully extinguished before guest accommodation was affected.
