One-day-old baby found abandoned in Carolina

It is suspected the baby's mother, who has not yet been found, gave birth in another town.

The Mpumalanga police are seeking the help of the community in a case of child neglect, after a one-day-old baby was found behind a transformer near Carolina Hospital’s fence.

According to Sergeant Thabang Mokwana, Carolina SAPS spokesman, the police were called to the hospital on May 20 at about 19:30.

The infant, weighing 2.49kg, was found wearing a vest and trousers, and was wrapped in a blanket.

The baby was taken to the hospital’s maternity ward.

“Upon further investigation, it was found that no new births were recorded at Carolina Hospital, but it is suspected that the mother might have given birth at Ermelo Provincial Hospital, as their records matched that of the child found,” Mokwana said.

He said the mother of the child has not yet been traced.

The police request anyone who might have information about the mother to contact the investigative officer, Sergeant Mmeli Nkosi of Elukwatini FCS, on 071 177 0927.
