Patient killed with fire extinguisher
A mentally challenged patient wreaked havoc at Addington Hospital in Durban when he allegedly killed another patient with a fire extinguisher.
Patients and staff at the hospital, which is currently under renovations, were left in shock after Bonginkosi Albert Shongwe (26) allegedly bashed the patient on his head, killing him instantly, Rising Sun Overport reported.
It is believed Shongwe was in the same ward as the other patients when he woke up in the early hours of Thursday morning and threatened patients in the ward.
Many escaped before he could cause harm to them.
Khayelihle Ngubane (32) reportedly could not run as he had been admitted to hospital after suffering serious leg and arm injuries during an alleged suicide attempt.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said: “It is alleged that the suspect, who is mentally challenged, grabbed the fire extinguisher and fatally assaulted the patient to the head. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage”.
The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.
He was remanded in the Westville Correctional Services.
The case was postponed to March 13.
In January, a patient was killed in a ward at the same hospital after being assaulted by another patient.
The KwaZulu-Natal health department said police investigations were ongoing.
