Police explosives unit investigate Middelburg shopping centre fire
A fire broke out at a Middelburg shopping centre after a shop owner was allegedly tied up by robbers.
A team from the SAPS’ forensic and explosive units are investigating a blaze that destroyed parts of the Eastdene Shopping Centre in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
An alleged attempted robbery took place this morning, while the Saverite owner was in the process of opening his store.
The robbers apparently proceeded to tie the owner up, before allegedly setting the store alight. Fortunately, the owner was able to escape through the shop’s back entrance.
He was then questioned by the police before being taken to the hospital, where he is currently being treated for the injuries he sustained this morning.
As at this stage, it is presumed an explosion is the cause of the blaze, with foul play suspected.
The Eastdene Shopping Centre fire is now under control thanks to the efforts of the fire brigade and help from the community.
