A 35-year-old man arrested for allegedly killing his 75-year-old father has died in police custody, prompting an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) into the circumstances surrounding his death, reports Sedibeng Ster.

The incident happened in Phomolong in Sharpeville, near Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, on Friday (August 29) at about 19:30. Police were called to a residence after the elderly man was allegedly assaulted with a ceramic plate during an argument with his son.

Police and emergency services attended the scene, where paramedics declared the 75-year-old man dead.

The suspect allegedly fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities. He was arrested and charged with murder.

However, the 35-year-old later died while in police custody.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela confirmed the incident.

“A man was arrested for the alleged murder of his father in Sharpeville. The suspect later died while in police custody. An inquest case docket has been opened,” she said.

Maxambela confirmed that IPID was notified of the incident and that the directorate is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
