Popular Pretoria wedding venue burns down

The cause of the fire which gutted part of the popular Riverside Castle wedding and function venue in the east of Pretoria over the weekend is yet to be determined.

According to Tshwane Emergency Services (TES) spokesperson, Johan Pieterse, firefighters managed to extinguish the fire which seemed to have occurred at one of the venue’s main halls on Saturday evening, Rekord East reported.

Pieterse added personnel from three fire stations as well as a water tank from Tshwane were on the scene.

“When TES arrived, the roof of the building had already collapsed. Though there was a function going on at the time, the fire broke out, the guests were evacuated and no one was injured during the fire,” Pieterse.

This after parts of the Carousel resort in Hibberdene, KwaZulu-Natal, were engulfed in fire last week.

The resort’s restaurant, reception area, bar, kitchen and dining room were apparently razed during the fire which broke out at about 3pm on Tuesday.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality spokesperson, Simon April, said no injuries were reported and investigations were underway to establish the extent of damage the fire caused. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

However, the owner of the resort, Danie Prinsloo, said a veld fire started at a neighbour`s house at about 1pm. Apparently some leafs caught fire and the wind blew them up to the roof of the resort, causing the building to catch fire.
