Postmortems for Krugersdorp crash victims underway
The bodies of two people who died in a light aircraft crash in Krugersdorp earlier today will be taken to a Roodepoort mortuary for a postmortem, paramedics said.
The accident happened around midday in the Munsieville area – about 2km outside of the Jack Taylor Airfield.
It was believed that the light aircraft crashed into the side of a ridge shortly after taking off, killing both the learner pilot and his instructor,Krugersdorp News reported.
Emergency services reportedly received a call at 12.01pm today and quickly informed local police and Netcare 911 paramedics.
According to an eyewitness, the plane stalled twice in the air, dipping its nose before crashing into the ground.
The eyewitness and a colleague reportedly made their way to the scene and found the two dead occupants.
“It looked like it was an instructor and his student,” he said.
The learner pilot’s girlfriend was reportedly also at the scene.
She was overcome with emotion when she was kept away from her boyfriend’s remains while police tried to console her.
In a separate incident, two men were seriously injured after a light aircraft crashed near Henley-on-Klip, in the south of Johannesburg, at the weekend.
The men were treated on scene and then taken to hospital.
The cause of the crash was being investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority.
