Pretoria nine-year-old makes headlines in golfing circles

He is currently leading the South African tour order of merit for age groups between u.9 and u.10. AJ will also be in action for the u.11 interprovincial tournament in March at Prince’s Grant golf estate.

There are a handful of names golf fans would know, but nine-year-old, Andrew James Phillips (AJ) is one name you might want to potentially remember.

Recently, AJ qualified for the Champion of Champions in Northern Ireland in July as well as for the US Kids World Junior Championship 2022 in Pinehurst.

He is the current reigning African junior u.8 champion and it was during this tournament that he booked his spot on the plane to compete in Northern Ireland.

The African champs took place at San Lameer country club where AJ was four behind the leader on the last day. He managed to make two birdies to take the lead, finishing the weekend with rounds of 38, 40 and 37.

What makes his achievements remarkable, is the fact that he only played in his first-ever tournament at Woodhill country club in November 2020.

AJ’s best lowest score over nine holes during a tournament is a 35 at Centurion country which is his favourite course and during a non-tournament, he boasts a score of 31.

His greatest inspiration is his father Andrew.

“He is not only my dad, but he is my caddy as well. He always gives me great advice on the course to motivate me and get my head back in the game after I hit a bad shot,” said the youngster.

He said that his biggest strength is his putting.

“I am working on my swing change and improving on hitting the ball at the target.”

Mother, Tamsin said that within just over a year, her son has made a big statement in the golfing circles.

“AJ has a consistency with his winning record.

“He loves attending school and always ensure that his homework is done before he plays any golf. As parents, we are super proud of our boy, who is not only a great golfer but also a top academic achiever,” she said.

She added that AJ’s dedication to the game is what makes him such a great player.

“He is very hard on himself, but he wants to be the best.”

AJ’s favourite player is Louis Oosthuizen.

“He is so involved in developing and growing junior golf. The rhythm of his golf swing and temperament on the course is an aspect I look up to.”

AJ cannot wait to get to the USA as world-renowned golfing legend, Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie might also be competing in the USA World Junior Champs.

“If there is anyone I would like to snap a photo with, it will be Tiger. I am holding thumbs that he will be there.”

Father, Andrew cannot stop talking about how proud he is of his son.

“AJ is a beautiful young boy and not just anything gets him down. He does have bad days on the course, but for such a young boy, he is mentally in a great space.

“I am so incredibly proud of his achievements over the past couple of months,” he said.

Coach Nardus Broodryk of the Wanna Be a Champion golf and fitness academy is proud of his talented player.

“His work ethic is incredible. His priorities are in place – when he comes for lessons he gives his best, but he knows that his academic work is his priority.

“I expect great things from AJ and as a coach, I will do everything I can to improve all aspects of his game,” said Broodryk.
