R1.8m worth of stolen tyres recovered, former police officer arrested
Investigations led police officers to a house in Umgababa where they recovered the tyres and a cellphone belonging to the driver who was hijacked.
An intelligence-driven operation, conducted by Pinetown police, led to the recovery of 80 tyres worth R1.8m that were stolen during a hijacking on Sunday, August 22.
The truck driver was travelling along the M7 to join the N3 highway to Johannesburg when he was hijacked by four men.
Two suspects, aged 29 and 34, were arrested the following day.Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said police investigations led them to a house in Umgababa where they recovered the tyres and a cellphone belonging to the driver who was hijacked.
“The two suspects, one of whom is an ex police officer appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, September 7 and they were denied bail. The second suspect was further charged for being in the country illegally,” said Manqele.
