SA warns of limited consular help in Iran as conflict grows

SA urges restraint in Israel-Iran conflict and advises South Africans in Iran to register with the embassy due to limited emergency support.

The South African government has expressed deep concern over the escalation of hostilities between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to SA News, the two countries have in recent days launched attacks against each other, resulting in the loss of lives, casualties and destruction of property.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the peoples of both nations suffering from the tragic loss of life,” the Ministry of International Relations and Co-operation said yesterday.

“South Africa emphasises that under international humanitarian law, civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be considered legitimate targets. We reiterate our urgent call for de-escalation, restraint, and full compliance with international law by all parties to prevent further human suffering,” it said.

SA News also reports that government has encouraged all citizens currently in the Islamic Republic of Iran to contact the South African Embassy in Tehran to ensure they are registered with, and that their whereabouts are known to, the embassy.

“It is important to note that South Africa’s support in the country is limited and that it could be assumed that no face-to-face consular assistance will be possible in an emergency and the South African government may not be able to help you if you get into difficulty, depending on your location.

“Therefore, citizens are further encouraged to assess their own safety and security and act accordingly,” the ministry said in a statement yesterday.
