SAA warns against recruitment scam

South African Airways (SAA) has warned the public of a recruitment scam inviting interested parties to apply for enrolment to be trained as cabin crew staff with the airline.

“Communication circulating around social media and distributed on other channels suggests that SAA was looking for 500 candidates with matric qualification to be trained as cabin crew members,” the airline’s spokesperson Tlali Tlali said.

In a statement, the airline distanced itself from the scam, saying it is misleading the public and has a potential to create confusion among SAA employees, Rekord Centurion reported.

“The reality is that we have put an employment freeze in place as the airline is currently undergoing headcount rationalisation to bring the number of staff in its employ to sustainable levels in an effort to make the company financially sustainable,” said Tlali.

SAA urged the public to be cautious, to protect their personal details and to cross check or verify information with the company before they decide to submit their applications.

“The communication in question bears all the hallmarks of a scam and seems to be preying on unsuspecting youth. We never insist that applications must be sent through personal e-mails and the company does not use @mailbox.co.za domain for e-mail communication purposes,” explained Tlali.

He added SAA advertises all recruitment vacancies, as well as recruitment campaigns for Youth Development Programmes, on its website: www.flysaa.pnet.co.za.

The airline is collaborating with external law enforcement agencies to trace the origins of the recruitment scam and the individuals behind it.

In October last year, the SA National Defence Force warned against a bogus recruitment company for soldiers. The group, Amabutho Royal Defence, was said to be operating in the Western Cape area, soliciting money from potential applicants.

Brigadier-General Xolani Mabanga said the company lured innocent victims from churches and schools over weekends and falsely demanded the victims to pay an amount of R700 for transportation to Pretoria and a T-shirt. The potential recruits were also promised a salary of R13 300, including an opportunity to study further.
