Security guard shot in the head during armed robbery

Police are looking for three armed suspects after a 33-year-old security guard was shot and wounded during an armed robbery at New Goodwill store in Empangeni area, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said it is alleged that the guard was responding to an alarm complaint at about 8am. On arrival at the store, he met the suspects who opened fire, wounding him on the head. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The suspects fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash and a video camera.

A case of armed robbery and attempted murder was opened at Empangeni police station for investigation and no arrests have been made.

In May, CCTV footage emerged showing a security guard being shot and injured during an armed robbery at a KFC franchise in Newlands East, KwaZulu-Natal.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a security company was delivering cash in one of the food outlets in the area when they were accosted by five suspects on Saturday.

“The suspects robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash and one firearm,” added Zwane.

In the video, the suspects are seen shooting towards the security company’s vehicle while the security guard is seen lying on the ground. It is alleged two bystanders were injured during the shooting.
