Shakaskraal town is a flooding hazard
Residents said they had reported the issue to the authorities and ward councillor Doeshiee Govender, without success.
The drainage system in Shakaskraal village has been a mess for years, resulting in floods every time it rains, North Coast Courier reports.
Residents said they had reported the issue to the authorities and ward councillor Doeshiee Govender, without success.
Govender said the road drainage piping needs to be dug out and installed with a bigger piping.
This matter had been brought to the attention of both the municipality and transport department, he said.
“During heavy rains the storm water affects the sewer main line by flooding it thus causing a sewer stench on numerous occasions. Both KDM and Siza Water rose to the challenge to assist in clearing the line and cleaning it up,” said Govender.
He said an investigation was to be done by both transport department and KDM to pave a way forward.
“Unfortunately our plans were stopped due to Covid-19. We now fast tracking this, which will mean part of the R102 within the town has to be dug up and new piping be installed. However, this cannot take place during the rainy season as it will affect the businesses on that road for 4 weeks,” said Govender.
KwaDukuza municipality spokesperson Sipho Mkhize said the matter has to be responded to by the department of transport.
However, he said their civil engineering had committed to escalating this matter.
The department of transport had not responded to inquiries at the time of publication.
