Shop owner shot dead during robbery

A foreign spaza shop owner has been shot and killed, while his two co-workers were seriously injured, during a business robbery in Tswelopele, Tembisa, on the East Rand, on Thursday.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said police found live ammunition and two cartridges at the crime scene. It is believed the suspects were all armed. All the victims were shot in the upper bodies. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, Tembisan reported.

“The spaza shop owner was certified dead at the scene, while his co-workers were transported to hospital by emergency services,” she added.

Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and business robbery.

In May, police in Middelburg, Mpumalanga positively linked a suspect to the murder of a man killed during an armed robbery that was caught on CCTV footage inside the Eastdene Liquor store.

Mukesh Ranchod, who worked at Heavy Feather, was shot and killed at point blank range at the liquor outlet where his wife Darshala worked.

In the video, the armed suspects are seen ordering the victims to the back of the store. As the victims are walking, Ranchod is seen standing in between the shelves, where the suspect shoots him in the upper body, after which Ranchod falls down. He died on the scene.
