Information that certain police officers, deployed along the country’s border lines, were assisting illicit cigarette smuggling syndicates, sparked an investigation that led to the arrest of six police officers.

The information was passed on to police by local residents, complaining about the police officers’ alleged involvement in with criminal syndicates.

“A take down operation was organised and led by the deputy provincial police commissioner, Major General Samuel Manala, assisted by the provicial head of organised crime, Brigadier Sakie Brancon, and Lieutenant Colonel Norman Malungane, as well as other members of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit,” SAPS spokespserons Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed in a statement.

A lengthy investigation was conducted by the joint investigation team, which led to the arrest of two warrant officers, three sergeants and a constable, who work at the Tshamutumbu Police Station in the Vhembe District on Friday (November 25).

The accused members, aged between 31-55, were either at work or at their homes Musina and Thohoyandou policing precincts respectively when they were taken into custody.

“The members allegedly created a safe passage for the smugglers to enter the country illegally and in possession of illicit cigarettes in exchange for gratifications and bribes to the officers. These activities reportedly occurred for a prolonged period by the members who enriched themselves at the expense of the state resources,” Mojapelo explained.

The accused police officials are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
