‘Speed merchant’ Caster Semenya pleads guilty to reckless driving on Centurion highway

The two-time Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya has been sentenced to perform 50 hours of community service following her arrest for reckless driving.
The 30-year-old athlete was arrested on the N14 highway in Centurion for alleged reckless driving last week Thursday.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that Semenya appeared in court for speeding on Friday.
“She pleaded guilty to the charge. After she was assessed, a suitable diversion programme meant to address the offence was given, which is 50 hours of community service,” Mahanjana said.
Mahanjana said that Semenya was released on bail of R500 on Thursday.
The matter was postponed to 26 August 2021, for the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders report.
Last month, Semenya moved closer to qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after defending her South African championships title in the 5000m final in Pretoria.
