Stage 2 continues, with possible loadshedding into the weekend

Eskom has previously warned that loadshedding may continue into the weekend.

As Eskom works to return several units to service, loadshedding stage 2 remains in effect today.

Stage 2 will run from 9pm this evening into Saturday morning at 5am.

The state-owned utility noted that emergency generation reserves had been depleted and delays in returning units to service at Tutuke, Grootvlei and Kendal power stations had contributed to the depletion.

Total breakdowns stand at around 14 982MW, with a further 5 334MW out on planned maintenance.

Eskom has previously warned that loadshedding may continue into the weekend.

“While we expect a number of units to return to service during the course of the next few days, we urge the public to reduce usage and continue using electricity sparingly.”

Meanwhile, Eskom – a coal-reliant power utility – has become the world’s largest emitter of sulfur dioxide.

Sulfur dioxide is a pollutant linked to ailments such as asthma and heart attacks, indicated the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.
